A washing machine that fills and washes but refuses to spin is the single most common repair call we get in Pokhara. The good news: about half of the causes are simple, and a few you can check yourself before paying anyone. Here are the seven we see most on home visits, roughly in order of how often they turn up.
1. A clogged drain pump or filter
Most machines refuse to spin until the water has drained. Coins, hair pins and cloth fibres collect in the drain filter — on most front-loaders it sits behind a small flap at the bottom front. Unplug the machine, put a towel down, open the flap and unscrew the filter. If dirty water and debris come out, clean it, refit it, and try a rinse-and-spin cycle. This fixes roughly one in four such complaints at zero cost.
2. An unbalanced or overloaded drum
Modern machines cancel the spin if the load is lopsided — one heavy blanket is the classic culprit. Redistribute the load or add a few towels and run the spin again. Also check the machine sits level on the floor; a rocking machine trips the same protection.
3. A worn or slipped drive belt
If the motor hums but the drum does not turn, the belt may have slipped off or stretched. Replacement is inexpensive and quick for a technician who carries the right belt sizes.
4. Worn carbon brushes in the motor
On many LG, Samsung and CG models the motor's carbon brushes wear down after 5–8 years. The telltale: the drum turns freely by hand but does nothing on any cycle. Brushes are a cheap part; fitting them takes under an hour at your home.
5. A faulty door lock
The machine will not spin if it cannot confirm the door is locked. If the door light blinks or the lock never clicks, the interlock has likely failed — a common, affordable replacement.
6. Drum bearings
A roaring or grinding noise during spin that has been getting louder for weeks points to worn drum bearings. This is the biggest job on this list — the drum has to come out — but it is still far cheaper than a new machine. Half the photos in our work gallery are bearing jobs.
7. The control board
If nothing above fits and the machine behaves erratically, the PCB may have failed — common after voltage fluctuations. We test before replacing; never buy a board on guesswork.
